Spreading Joy in Zwide: A Heartwarming Day at Ekuphumeleni Old Age Home
There is something truly special about taking a moment during the festive season to pause and connect with the elders in our community. On 16 December, the team at ACMF, in collaboration with Mihla M, had the privilege of doing exactly that.
We headed to Booi Street in Zwide, Gqeberha, to visit the wonderful residents of the Ekuphumeleni Old Age Home1. Our goal wasn’t just to visit; it was to spend meaningful time with the elderly and show them deep appreciation through care and genuine social engagement.
Here is a look at how the day unfolded and why it meant so much to us.
Who We Visited
The Ekuphumeleni facility is a vital part of the Zwide community. Currently, it is home to 71 senior citizens who have so much wisdom and history to share.
During our visit, we met a diverse group of elders, including:
- 49 men aged between 63 and 90 years.
- 22 women aged between 61 and 97 years.
More Than Just a Visit: A Day of Pampering
We wanted to make sure the residents felt their best, physically and emotionally. Often, the simple act of touch and grooming can restore a sense of dignity and comfort. To make the day special, we set up stations for personal care activities.
Our team got to work providing:
- Manicures and pedicures for those who wanted a bit of pampering.
- Hairdressing and grooming services to help the residents look and feel fresh.
It was incredible to see how a fresh haircut or painted nails could light up a face. These small gestures opened the door for beautiful conversations and laughter.
Sharing a Meal Together
No community gathering is complete without food. We believe that breaking bread together is one of the oldest and most powerful ways to bond.
We prepared a full meal not just for the residents, but for the hardworking staff as well8. It was a joy to sit down, eat, and listen to the stories the seniors had to share.
Why This Matters
Events like this remind us that the holiday season and indeed every day is about connection. The purpose of this outreach was simple: to demonstrate our appreciation for our elders. Seeing 71 smiles and hearing the laughter in the hallways of Ekuphumeleni was the greatest gift we could have asked for.
We want to thank everyone involved, especially the team from Mihla M for collaborating with ACMF to make this happen.
